A Truckload of Money

Blog Post No. 592

20190904_191407My main mode of transportation is a little pickup truck. It’s a bit older, but it’s in pretty good shape. The previous owner took extremely good care of it and I’ve tried to keep up on it. This year seems to be the year that maintenance needs to be done, thought. It’s at the mileage and age that those things aren’t a surprise and over the years that I’ve had it, it’s been mostly problem free, so I’m not terribly frustrated with it. This latest repair was a bit of a dozy, though.

One Year In

Blog Post No. 591

goatI’m sitting in the office where I work while a large group of people are setting up their 11 day event in the building. Everything is hectic and I’m trying to stay on top of it while getting my own work done. People are excited and angry (at me for giving them answers they don’t like) and I’m tired. At this time last year, the same event was happening, but I wasn’t in my current position. I was at a different desk being hands on with their setup, training new staff, and trying to prepare for the job I currently have. I was tired then, too.

A Story about a Feeling I’ve Never Had

Blog Post No. 590

Screenshot 2024-04-23 131638There is an intersection of an old highway and a concession road not too far from where I live. If you drive down the highway heading north-east, as you approach the intersection, there are a few houses a little farther apart than in a suburb. Next to one of them is an old cemetery and there are a fair number of trees on both sides as well as a creek. I used to pass the area often when I spent a year going to school in another city.

The Sarnia Pop Culture Show 2024

Blog Post No. 589

436802258_10227330309816263_956463541910095260_nLast year the only convention I went to was The CKExpo in Chatham in April. It was the first one I’d been to since 2019. Back before then, I tried to do one event a month whether it was a convention or local book reading, or even a street market. This year, the first event (and for now only) event on my agenda is the Sarnia Pop Culture Show, which happened last Sunday.

The SPCS has always been good to me. This past trip was, I believe, the fourth time I’d been there and at the risk of ruining the suspense, I sold a lot more than I expected. The first time I went was shortly after No Light Tomorrow came out. I’m pretty sure it was among the first conventions I ever went to. Continue reading “The Sarnia Pop Culture Show 2024”

Advice from Strange Places – Reflections on Focus Knob

Blog Post No. 588

ohpfull1I’m back with another reflection on a post that I wrote many years ago. In this case, we’re looking at close to 10 years ago (minus a few weeks). I’ve had the idea for a few years now of a post about some of the advice that’s come my way, but I wasn’t sure how I would approach writing it. I was always a little intimidated with trying to get the right feeling across. Well, I looked back and found a mention of one of the pieces of strange advice in a post from May 13th, 2013. Blog Post No. 28 Focus Knob.

Prep for Another Event

Blog Post No. 587

LG_LLNR ACNF3 N2 DEH0 DEL0 DP0 ADP0 BS0 DS0 DEP0 FC0Last year I went to my first event since 2019. It was the CKExpo in Chatham, a nice sized convention with comics, artists, some authors, and all things geeky. It was my first time going to the CKExpo, so I double didn’t know what to expect. Thankfully, it was a pretty good time where I got to catch up with some of the amazing people I had met over the years at other conventions in the province. This year, I’m heading back to the Sarnia Pop Culture Show, a slightly larger convention that I have been to a few times.

Discovery – Reflections on CDs on the Radio

Blog post No. 586

77dccf9f-5343-478d-b873-1a5a54bf99b5_textThis is the first of whatever that thing was I posted about last week where I look back on old posts. Before I get into this week’s topic, I want to point out that while trolling through the old posts, I noticed not only that many of the image links are dead, but I was pretty creative with the titles when I started. Sometimes not for the better, but it got me wanting to put more effort into titles again. The post I’m looking back on this week came out on November 17th, 2010. Blog Post No. 5 CDs on the Radio.

Revisiting Old Posts

Blog Post No. 585

5a9a4b1432da8dff1d2cf2e17d5a81d1I had an idea and from the title of this post, I think you can figure out what it is. I haven’t gone back to look at any of my older posts in quite a while. I’ve been doing this for over a decade, so not only am I intimidated, I don’t really have time to review every old post and manage to write new ones. When I only had a hundred or so posts, I would sometimes go back to make sure the links still worked and occasionally, that would lead me to want to update something I’d said years earlier.

Wasted Potential

Blog Post No. 584

ted-lasso-smells-like-potential-cd6eet9os04oymvfLast week I was looking for something to watch for while I do mundane things. I enjoy having a show on or listening to a podcast when I’m doing the laundry or making dinner. I save the shows I really want to watch for when I can sit down and pay attention (while trying to not be distracted by my phone). I ended up stumbling across a show I had forgotten about.

Situation and Mood

Blog Post No. 583

nc5qcgvnMany years ago, when I was in high school, I went to the mall with my buddy Matt. We had a usual route we took that led through the music stores and while browsing, I bought the (then) new album by the band Limblifter, Balaclava. I’d loved the first album and as soon as we got to Matt’s house, I put it on his stereo and was immediately disappointed.
